Nation Celebrates Teacher Appreciation Day 2025, Honoring Educators’ Vital Role

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Across the United States today, students, parents, and school districts are coming together to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Day 2025, a heartfelt observance that recognizes the dedication and impact of educators in classrooms nationwide.

Observed annually on the first Tuesday of May, Teacher Appreciation Day falls within Teacher Appreciation Week, a time when communities reflect on the vital contributions of teachers to society. This year, the theme promoted by the National Education Association is “Teachers: Inspiring the Future.”

From handmade cards and classroom breakfasts to school assemblies and online tributes, students and families are expressing their gratitude for the tireless work teachers do—often beyond the classroom. Social media platforms are flooded with hashtags like #ThankATeacher and #TeacherAppreciationDay, as former and current students share memories and messages of thanks.

President Joe Biden released a statement this morning praising educators, calling them “the backbone of our democracy” and pledging continued support for policies that prioritize teacher pay, classroom resources, and mental health services.

“Teachers don’t just teach—they uplift, mentor, and empower the next generation,” said Biden. “On this day, we honor their sacrifices and affirm our commitment to giving them the respect and resources they deserve.”

In many districts, local businesses are offering discounts and free meals to educators, while some schools are holding surprise celebrations and staff recognition ceremonies. At a middle school in Austin, Texas, teachers were greeted with a red carpet and cheers from students as they entered the building.

Despite the appreciation, challenges remain. Teacher shortages, burnout, and underfunded schools continue to be major issues in public education. Many educators say the recognition is welcome, but lasting change is needed.

“I love my students, but we need more than thank-yous,” said Jamie Lee, a high school science teacher in Michigan. “We need real investment in education and support for the challenges we face every day.”

Still, today is largely a day of gratitude, reflection, and celebration. As schools across the nation take a moment to thank those who educate and inspire, one message rings clear: teachers matter, and their work shapes the future.
